Anyone who’s serious about Christmas cheer knows that investing in a real, and fresh tree is the best way to set the mood in any home.  Real Christmas trees smell nice, look nice, feel nice, and they’re better for the environment. It’s deciding on which type of tree to invest in, though, that’s really the hardest part of this annual dilemma. Understanding the differences between the main three types of trees you’ll come across this holiday season – Fraser, Balsam, and Spruce firs – can help you make the best decision for your home.

Fraser Firs
Fraser fir Christmas trees are the perfect option for those looking to get the biggest and best out of their tree. It’s one of the strongest and long lasting options out there, making it ideal for décor-lovers who have endless amounts of ornaments to fill the branches with. The branches angle slightly upwards, giving the tree a perky, cheery look that’s sure to impress. Fraser firs:
  • Have Thick and Strong needles
  • Give off a mild fragrance
  • Are some of the most common Christmas tree finds
These trees lack the strong fir smell some people look for in a tree, but make up for it with thick, strong branches and a fullness that’s hard to find anywhere else. They’re easily available and fit well with any décor.

Balsam Firs
The Balsam fir Christmas tree is likely the good option that comes to mind when you begin thinking about holiday trees, even if you’re not aware of it. These small-to-medium-sized trees are immediately noticeable for their conical shape, marking them as the iconic Christmas tree that they are. Their dark green needles are also interspersed with natural hints of silver, which brings you the strongest smell of Christmas Trees. These hints of color and the tree’s beautiful green shade are why branches of these trees are so often used for wreaths, garlands, and bouquets. Balsam firs:
  • Have dark green, thin needles
  • Give off a strong, sweet-spicy fragrance
  • Have an iconic look and feel that complements any décor scheme
These classic trees have the perfect conical shape and fragrant, deep green needles most people want from a tree. However, they’re usually somewhat smaller than both Canaan firs and Fraser firs, and its branches may not be quite as sturdy.

Spruce Firs
If you have cat, this is the best choice for you to have a real Christmas tree!

needles are about 1 1/2” long on very strong branches. They are great to decorate but very tricky to handle as it has very pokey needles. Cats won't want to mess with it. Gloves can make this beautiful tree easier to work with.

Christmas trees play a big part in our favorite holiday traditions. We decorate, open gifts and celebrate with friends and family around the tree. As the grandfather of Christmas tree farm sales in the Chicago area, our customers always want to know the secrets to keeping the tree fresh longer. Unfortunately, there are no secrets except the following tips below

1: Choose a Healthy and Fresh Tree

Nowadays, more and more people are relying on online shopping. But it is different for Christmas tree shopping. To pick out the healthiest and Freshest Tree, you will have to visit a local tree lot/farm, to actually touch the tree and rub the needles. Make sure you pick out the tree with the least number of brown needles and they can stay on the tree, not fall off easily. Check our 4 locations to see which one is nearby.

2: Have Fresh Cut Trunk

When you're buying a tree, make sure the seller/salesman has fresh cut for you at the tree lot. Take 2 or 3 inches off from the bottom. Chicago Christmas Tree Lot not only will offer you a fresh-cut but also a trim around the trunk to make sure it fits right into the stands.

3: Drink Enough Water

Don't forget to regularly give your Christmas tree water. Normally, within a few hours of a fresh-cut, the tree should be put in fresh water. If you can't set it up in the tree stand right away, you can always put it in a bucket or so. Feed with warm water for the first time and after that, regular water will be fine and check it daily to never let it run out of water.
Attention, the tree will drink a lot of water at the first 2 or 3 days to open up. It's crucial to monitor the water level morning/night for the first 2 or 3 days.
